Red Flower

by Aaminah Naveed, Dixons Cottingley Academy, Year 11

Creation flourishes in destruction.

Flaccid stem and stubborn trunk -

Stomach smothered in soaked soil,

flowers bleed in striking red;

seeds of soul begin to sprout.

Winds shoulder whispers of memories: old,

new.

Nourished in warm sun-

silenced wounds, exposed once more.

Sustenance of shame, isolation, regret,

Blooming in acceptance, change, healing.

Roots strangulate desires,

thorns tear baby-soft flesh,

leaves coated in long-forgotten poisons.

An anthesis born of beautified anguish.

Flowers sprout deep within my suffering.

Potent. Winsome. Worthy.
