Speak Your Roots
by Rachel Claire
Your roots are more visible than you think -
Less hidden than you thought, may as well be written in ink.
When you open your mouth and the words come tumbling out
We know where you're from, if it's north or if it's south.
Do you bath on the hearth?
Or do maths in your baths?
Did you sing a song with your tongue?
Or was it sung by your tongue?
Do you sneak down the snicket?
Or look pretty in a gitty?
Do you eat cobs, rolls or baps?
Or is a barm cake much more fitting?
Be proud of your sound that comes out when you talk.
Don't hide it away. Speak it loud, standing tall.
It connects you to your home, so you feel like you belong.
Your roots are in your mouth, where you've journeyed, where you're from.
