Triangle to Triangle

by Kathy Bramley

I come from trees, trains and rhymes

From mill-based UNESCO sites

From mined-out towns and textiles

And the feel of a fractured

But close-knit community

Brilliant and oppressive by turns

I come from Ambergate, I live in Shipley

That was then, this is now

Trunk roads, railways, triangular stations

Sing me to sleep in Betty Kenny's tree

Rockabye baby: you're an adult, free!

Shining Cliffe to Wycliffe

Thacker's Wood to Spring's Wood

Northcliffe, Hirstwood and Heaton

Derwent to Aire, canal to canal

Salt, Peel, Lister - Arkwright, Strutt, Stephenson

Lime kiln funicular, long-gone,

To having fun at Shipley Glen
